Scientists have made a startling discovery: what happens in the brain after death?
The brain may remain active even after the brain activity monitoring devices show a screen draped months , suggest a new study .
The study was initiated after doctors in Romania have noticed a strange brain activity on an EEG of a patient in a coma while he was under the influence of drugs against seizures .
After this observation , researchers at the University of Montreal were anesthetized 26 cats and they have recorded brain activity in higher cortical regions and the hippocampus . For all cats were found after electroencephalography indicated that brain activity has ceased , the hippocampus of animals still seemed to show signs of activity. According to the study , the results appear to show the same phenomenon observed in the human patient .
Scientists say the findings suggest that it is possible , through a process unknown to us , the brain has the capacity to survive very deep coma inducing such a state that could help preserve certain brain functions that would otherwise be off , which would lead to cerebral atrophy .
Evidence of increased brain activity after sudden cardiac arrest may explain the anecdotes told by patients who would return from experiences around the time of death and referring to the feeling of leaving the body or menus fast memories like a movie.
Another recent study in mice showed that brain activity does not stop gradually after cardiac arrest , but that it even intensifies at times .
However, scientists in Montreal suggests that there is a state beyond the end of cortical activity and that an area of the brain associated with memory closely could send signals to his master , the cortex , which generates high positions, including consciousness .
